The New York Giants squeezed out a one-point win against the Cowboys on the opening weekend of the NFL season. With 1:12 remaining in the game, the Giants made a very curious choice. Leading by 1 point and facing a 4th and 1 on the Cowboys 37-yard line they decided to punt. To make matters worse, the punt went into the end zone resulting in a net gain of only 17 yards. A successful first down conversion would have sealed the deal and even a failure would have left the Cowboys with the challenging task of marching into field goal range (advancing about 25 yards with no time outs). The Edj model assesses the Giants with a 9.3% game-winning chance (“GWC”) error by punting. To compound matters, the touch back bumps the error up to approximately 16% GWC.
